your story --------- "BRINGING SMILES ON THE FACES OF FELLOW
HUMAN BEINGS - CURING LEPROSY PATIENTS "

Rotary Club of Lucknow is
one of the oldest clubs in India, established in the year1937 and
since last 5 years, besides taking up other service and community
projects, and eradication of Polio, our club has taken up the
daunting task of not only helping Leprosy patients in getting
proper treatment and providing them with INSULATED utensils so that
their hands don’t get burnt while cooking. Due to leprosy, the
affected parts become insensitive and the person is not able to gauge
the heat or cold and sometimes their hands get burnt. Leprosy is an
affliction in which not only the patient but even the patient’s
family members become outcastes in the society. People are not
prepared to marry a leprosy patient’s sister, because of the
various superstitions prevailing about the disease. It is the poor
who are most at risk and improved sanitation and information about
hygiene and about cure and rehabilitation of  the patients can
go a along way in improving the health of the family and the
community. Although we have found a Preventive Vaccine for Polio,
there is no such vaccine as yet for Leprosy Prevention.

         The
Rotary Club of Lucknow, RI Dist.3120 has screened a number of Leprosy
affected patients from various parts of the district and nearby areas
with the help of doctors and technicians of the Health Department of
UP, India and Departments of THE PHYSICAL MEDICINE AND
REHABILITATION, and PLASTIC SURGERY in the treatment of these
patients, so that they are fit enough to once again join the
mainstream of the society. With this aim in view, the patients
are asked to gather at a primary health centre on a particular
day and screened for the following

1.
Age between
15yrs and 45 yrs

2.
They have
undergone full treatment for leprosy

3.
The
deformity in the hands / legs is for more than 6 months

4.
The patient
has not taken Steriods

5.
There is no
lapra reaction

6.
There is no
injury on the hand/foot to be operated

7.
There is no
stiffness in the joints of the hand/foot

8.
The
patients are willing and fully prepared to undergo the operation.

          Those
patients who meet the above criteria are then asked to come to the
Rehabilitation centre on a particular day along with one attendant to
look after the patients. The patients are surgically operated by the
doctors of the Department of Plastic Surgery and post operative care
is taken up at the REHABILITATION Centre for the next 6-7 days
.All the expenses of treatment, medicines, fooding, stay and
management, travelling of the patients as well as the attendants are
taken care of by the ROTARIANS. Once these patients are fully fit,
they are able to work for themselves and once again become a part of
the mainstream of society. The gift of treatment and rehabilitation
provided by the Rotary Club Of Lucknow to these Leprosy patients will
kindle A RAY OF HOPE AND DIGNITY in these patients, who’ll
always be grateful to all the Rotarians the world over, for making
them live in dignity and for taking care of them. And the
ROTARIANS seeing their good work being rewarded with the SMILES
of the patients shall also feel a sense of fulfilment and pride which
will remain etched in their mind for a long long time.

After seeing the good
work being done by the ROTARIANS, the Principal Secretary of
Health was so impressed that he asked the Rotarians not to stop this
commendable work because of financial constraints as funds would not
be a problem for the treatment of these leprosy patients. The
Rotary Club of Lucknow is thankful to all the doctors, technicians,
staff and Rotary members for their help and cooperation, and a sense
of gratitude and a big thank you to the Rotary Club of Hague
Metropolitan, Holland for the Matching Grant, which made all
this possible and enabled us, Rotarians to serve the community and
the society at large.

The above would not have
been possible without the cooperation help and interest taken by Rtn
Dr. Bhandarkar, a former member of Rotary Club of Lucknow and
presently a member of Rotary Club, Indore, Rtn Dr. Chaddha of Hague
Metropolitan, Holland for his keen interest & arranging a
“Matching Grant” from Rotary International and personally
arranging funds for providing insulated utensils and treatment of the
above patients. We are also grateful to Dr. A K Singh and his team of
the Plastic Surgery Dept. and Dr. A K Agarwal and his team of
technicians of Rehabilitation Centre. Thanks are also due to PP Rtn
Vipin Gupta, PP Rtn N V Tiwari, IPP Rtn B K Gupta, Rtn M L Gupta,
Sec. Rtn Dr S R Singh, Pres. Rtn Sumer Agarwal & many other Rtns
and staff of Rotary Club of Lucknow. We are also grateful to the
Heath Dept., Govt. Of UP and the Leprosy Primary Centres, their
doctors and technicians as well as the support staff. We are greatly
obliged to Sri Arun Kumar Mishra, Principal Secretary, Health for his
encouragement and support.
